Department of paediatric gastroenterology

In our paediatric gastroenterology department, children with acute or chronic illnesses of the digestive organs and with nutritional disorders are evaluated and treated. Frequent symptoms with which they present to us are, for example, spasmodic bellyaches, prolonged diarrhoea, persistent constipation, chronic vomiting, food intolerances, as well as failure to thrive and weight loss.

Diagnostics and treatment

  • Chronic bellyaches
  • Chronic constipation

  • Coeliac disease
  • Chronic inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Gastritis such as, for example, Helicobacter pylori infection

  • Liver illnesses (unclear transaminase increase, autoimmune hepatitis, infectious hepatitis, metabolic diseases of the liver such as, for example, Wilson's disease, fatty liver)

Function tests, special evaluations and therapies:

  • Gastroscopy (diagnostic esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
  • Therapeutic interventions such as, for example, balloon dilatation, foreign body removals
  • Attachment or change of PEG probes (feeding tubes)
  • Colonoscopy (ileocolonoscopy), if necessary, polyp removal
  • Percutaneous liver biopsy
  • H2 breath test for the diagnosis of lactose (lactose intolerance) or fructose malabsorption (fructose intolerance)
  • Abdomen sonography
  • Rectum manometry in collaboration with paediatric surgery
  • ERCP, video capsule endoscopy with older children in collaboration with the Clinic for Internal Medicine I
  • Special laboratory and stool diagnostics (food allergies, Coeliac disease)
  • Food re-exposure with food allergy
  • Nutrition counselling with food allergies, Coeliac disease, etc.
