Perinatal Centre

As early as when they established the Klinikum Dritter Orden, the founders felt a special focus of their work was on looking after pregnant women and young mothers and their newborn children. So Obstetrics is traditionally one of the core concerns of our Clinic. Increasingly it has become apparent that the very best treatment and care of high-risk pregnant women, sick newborn infants and premature infants requires the interdisciplinary integration of various specialists (gynaecologists, midwives, neonatologists, neuropaediatricians, paediatric surgeons, anaesthetists, etc.). The innovative response to this realisation is a special organisational and spatial unit at the Klinikum Dritter Orden – the Perinatal Centre (Latin perinatal = pertaining to birth).

The concept is already evident in the spatial design: our Maternity Department is practically “next door” to the Caesarean Operating Theatre and the Intensive Care Department for Newborn Children. In addition there is always a complete team of doctors and nurses on duty around the clock. The short distances prevent an unnecessary waste of time in critical situations. Our Intensive Care Ward has twelve ventilator beds and six monitoring beds as well as a surgical procedure room for emergencies, and in technical terms is state-of-the-art.

This organisational structure, the staff and equipment at the Klinikum Dritter Orden led the health insurers to recognise our interdisciplinary Perinatal Centre as a Level I Perinatal Centre.

We work closely together with obstetricians in local practice and outside obstetric clinics. In this way more and more high-risk pregnant women (mothers-to-be expected to have risks – e.g. a premature birth) find their way to us in good time. At present we are responsible for more than 2,000 newborn children every year, of whom 65 are tiny premature infants weighing less than 1,500 grams at birth. Annually we operate on 80 newborn babies with congenital malformations in the first days of their lives. The specialisation in Neonatology is based on the close co-operation with the major obstetric clinics in and around Munich (the Red Cross Gynaecology Hospital, the Dr. Geisenhofer Gynaecology Clinic, and the Dachau District Clinic) and with the Munich Prenatal Medicine Practice. A partner of this practice, Dozent Dr. Dietmar Schlembach, was engaged as Deputy Head of the Perinatal Centre. The Paediatric Clinic neonatologists also take care of the newborn infants in the gynaecology clinics referred to under co-operation agreements.
